Pontybrenin is a small Welsh town where the mines have long since closed and
unemployment and drug abuse are rife. It also has a reputation as the most
haunted town in Europe which many believe is due to the dozens of Neolithic
standing stones in the valley - but no-one has connected the stones and the
hauntings to discover the malignant pentagram stretching across the
post-industrial landscape.
Thomas Lewis returns to his family home to prepare for
his father’s funeral, pursued by the voices and incidents that have
tormented him all his life. His marriage in ruins, his children estranged,
his sanity precarious, he has little hope for the future and fears that
someone - or something – now wants him dead.
His niece, Gemma Lewis, is behaving suspiciously at the
family gathering and he is shocked to discover that she is a natural
telepath – and realises that his torment has been due to the constant denial
of his own unique talents.
Gemma confesses that she has a guardian ‘angel’
protecting and guiding her and her worried mother recruits her old tutor,
Doctor Smith, to investigate but as Thomas explores his gift, he is cursed
by a stigmata – a phenomena that sets him apart as a freak of nature.
Meanwhile, the feared Sheppards move to renew
their old vendetta with the Lewises. Paul Sheppard has his own ‘cellar
angel’ – which possesses him, driving him to the final, fatal confrontation
with Thomas Lewis and his extraordinary niece.
